Video Of The Week 5/25/2009

I love The Turtle!  This video is about the world's first submarine, which was used by the American colonists during the American Revolutionary War.  This OLLIE video was created by 5th graders in Mr. Lifton's class at Creative Science School, during the Winter 2008 term.

The live action parts of The Turtle are hilarious.  I especially like the dialogue between the two overconfident tea-drinking British officers.  Where this movie really shines though is during the animated sequences.  These students put an incredible amount of detail into this project, right down to a spinning propeller and bubbles rising from the submarine.

What impressed me the most about this group of students was that they really had a vision, and followed through on it, even if it meant doing extra work.  They wanted a point-of-view shot from the interior of the Turtle, so they created one.  They wanted really good sound effects, so they went around gathering their own sounds.  I remember that when the students recorded the terrified shrieks at the end of the movie, a teacher rushed out of a neighboring classroom to rescue the kids, whom she thought were in some kind of trouble.

Anyway, I could write a lot more about this group and video, but you should just watch and enjoy.  I've seen this movie 100 times, and I never get sick of it.  OLLIE Youth Media loves Creative Science School.  You kids rock!
